Starting my Acne, Skincare and Waxing Studio; Smooth Surface Skin and Waxing by Dani Parker
By: Dani Parker
For the past 9 years, I have been the Lead Esthetician for 2 luxury spas here in downtown Ann Arbor. I loved my job and I loved my team of estheticians but in the end I wanted the freedom to be able to perform the services that my clients needed. With that freedom, it is also liberating to be able to try new products and ingredients. New skincare services, wax products, tools and materials. The choice was clear that it was now or never that I would have to set out on my own.
Having been in the beauty industry for a decade and a half now has also given me a good set of "street smarts" when it comes to seeing what others have done before me. What works and what doesn't. When to stick with something and when to let go. Now its time to put my money where my mouth is and get started. Not wanting to be too top heavy and take on more than I could afford it was important to choose the right space for me. That decision after a fair amount of looking was Sola on Maple Road in Ann Arbor. Many of my friends had made the choice to start their own business there. Beautiful space, great amenities, others like me in my close proximity. Sharing a studio with another established esthetician is also a big plus.
The next part was going to be much harder. What skin care will I use and materials? Having been a Lead Esthetician for many years I've been able to really compare many skin lines. My needs and the direction I needed to take for my existing clients was clear. Starting off small will allow me to have the best products and materials on the market. Finally having decided on Vivant Skincare and Image Skincare, these lines are the best delivery method for my Acne and Anti Aging guests. For wax I went with Waxxxpress that is made in Australia and one of the top lines used by estheticians all over the world. To round things off I will also be incorporating the Celluma Pro LED Panel to assist in all my Acne and Anti Aging needs. I just knew that if I looked long enough I could find the right space to start out in and offer the best materials to my clients.
Finally, who is my demographic? What clients will I serve best? That answer was clear as well. I wanted to stress to the community around me that my business is a safe place for all! For many years I have been waxing woman, men, trans, gay, straight, large, small, 1st time never been waxed before, young and old. Sometimes I have people drive as much as 3 hours to get their brows done by me because they know how important it is to me to offer judgement free services. Putting ALL Body waxing and specifically noting on my business card that I have a LGBTQ menu was a moment that was extremely gratifying. Peoples most intimate waxing and skincare needs takes someone who's been through it all and in control of the situation.
